Fujitsu Promotes Mobile Technology Partnerships in the Automotive Industry

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/26/11 -- To promote the integration of cutting-edge technology into modern vehicles, Fujitsu will draw upon its vast global experience working with the world's leading automotive manufacturers.

As car manufacturers address the fundamental challenges presented by technological innovation and the coming shift to battery-powered electric vehicles, the industry's traditional business model looks set to give way to a radical new approach.

Car manufacturers are quickly adopting a partnership model when incorporating high-tech features into modern-day vehicles. Partnership with established technology infrastructure, service and content providers, such as Fujitsu, is essential to ensuring that in-car platforms are the most compelling for potential vehicle users.

Today, more lines of software code are in a modern car than in a commercial airplane -- from pollution avoidance solutions, through comfort and safety features, to in-car entertainment and satellite navigation.

"What's more, cars -- and the advanced computing power they contain -- are now becoming increasingly connected to the internet," said Paul Warburton, Global Account Director and Head of Automotive at Fujitsu. "This will cause an explosion in functionality and features, similar to what has happened in the mobile phone industry."

After cars can communicate electronically with other vehicles in real time -- exchanging information such as current speed, performance data, road conditions and precise location -- a new vista opens for accident-avoidance, traffic-flow and parking management solutions, and ultimately the self-driving vehicle.
