ETERNUS CS Efficient Data Protection for Enterprises and the Mid-Market

Fujitsu Delivers Greater Disaster Resilience, Even Across Long Distances, Plus a Unique Archiving Approach for Consolidated, Flexible, and Cost-Effective Use of Disk or Tape Storage Media

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/26/10 -- Fujitsu today announces the global launch of the fifth generation of its ETERNUS® CS High End data protection appliance for larger enterprises, and the second generation of its ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance for mid-sized and smaller businesses.

Businesses of all sizes have never before had a greater need for efficient data protection. Society depends more on IT than ever before in history, especially with the prevalence of computer-centered business processes, and the rise of social networking and digital publishing. The rates of exponential growth in unstructured and duplicated/replicated data are unlikely to slow, while fierce competition through globalization continues to drive the search for ever greater efficiency as we emerge slowly out of global recession. Lastly, environmental changes further pressure the allocation of scarce resources and drive up energy costs, while extreme natural disasters, such as fires in Russia, or flooding in Pakistan, focus attention on the risks of failure.

Introduced today at Storage Networking World 2010 in Frankfurt, Germany, these market-leading ETERNUS CS data protection appliances have been enriched with a complete portfolio of best-of-breed products designed to enable businesses to thrive in this challenging environment. Integrated into a completely consolidated data protection eco-system, ETERNUS CS is surrounded by a comprehensive set of services, starting with installation and maintenance up to Managed Services.

Key developments in the new generation include significant improvements for disaster protection even across countries or continents, with cascaded appliances and replication of deduplicated backup data. Support of mixed-media archiving requirements is now possible within a consolidated disaster protection environment. Cost of disk backup can also be further reduced, by leveraging the entire ETERNUS CS appliance range with deduplication technology.

"As businesses emerge out of a global financial crisis, and look for new ways to strengthen their business, it doesn't take long to realize that protecting business-critical data is the key," said Richard McCormack, SVP, Server & Solutions Business at Fujitsu America. "With over 10 years deep experience at the leading edge of efficient data protection, Fujitsu is earning its reputation as the world's trusted advisor on efficient data protection."

"The introduction of the ETERNUS CS800 marks a strategic shift by Fujitsu and a more aggressive stance in the data protection appliance market. At the high end, large enterprises have deployed over 700 CSX000 series units that allow the consolidation of open systems and mainframe backup systems into companywide solutions that simplify management, increase resilience, and make more effective use of physical tape," said Nick Sundby of IDC research group. "The addition of deduplication will sharply increase effective storage capacities and should accelerate the return on investment for many customers."

ETERNUS CS High End Data Protection Appliance V5
The ETERNUS CS High End data protection appliance for dynamic infrastructures (the successor of the former CentricStor® data protection solution) provides intelligent data protection across an entire heterogeneous infrastructure. Designed to meet the needs of larger enterprises, its unique multiple tier storage solution exploits the best of disk and tape in a seamless way, by storing all protected data-policy-based and autonomously through multiple tiers, and on various storage devices.

After an incident, business-critical data must be restored as quickly as possible to minimize or prevent negative impacts on the business. ETERNUS CS High End shortens backup windows to a minimum with disk performance and fulfils all recovery time objectives and retention period demands for each business-critical environment. This makes backup and archiving fit for ILM (Information Lifecycle Management), enterprises data protection can be flexibly aligned at different service level agreements and compliance regulations.

A company's ability to consolidate data centers greatly simplifies their administration efforts and lowers the total cost of storage through enabling efficient use of the most cost-effective storage technologies. ETERNUS CS High End offers superior Virtual Tape Library (VTL) and Network-Attached Storage (NAS) connectivity for True Tape Virtualization and File Archiving. The comprehensive support for the widest range of mainframes, open systems, NAS devices and industry-leading backup applications guarantees a seamless operational integration. Advanced deduplication and compression technologies further minimize capacity requirements and increase the benefits of energy efficiency.

The powerful Grid Architecture of ETERNUS CS High End features unmatched scalability, automatic failover and cascaded long distance appliance connections ensuring unmatched disaster resiliency for protection against site outages. Its high level of redundancy is also the basis for non-disruptive upgrades and provides superior data availability to ensure business continuity for each class of data center.

ETERNUS CS800 S2 Data Protection Appliance
Designed to broaden access to efficient data protection into the mid-market, ETERNUS CS 800 is a turnkey data protection appliance and provides a simple and affordable solution for customers who follow a disk backup strategy with deduplication. The advanced deduplication technology reduces typical capacity requirements for disk-to-disk backup by up to 90% to reduce costs. ETERNUS CS800 provides maximum disk performance and highest scalability. Backup data replication between sites uses global deduplication to reduce typical network bandwidth needs by a factor of 20 or more. ETERNUS CS800 also supports the Symantec OpenStorage and Path-to-Tape.

Both products are available in all global regions. Availability and cost varies by region.
